The University of Montana invites applications for a Dean of Students/Associate Vice Provost for Wellbeing (DOS/AVP) for the Office of the Vice Provost. This position reports to the Vice Provost for Student Success (VPSS) and will provide vision and oversight for a collaborative and comprehensive approach to student health and wellbeing, advocacy and support, case management, community standards and related policy.

As the DOS/AVP you will be responsible for day-to-day operations, supervision and oversight of Curry Health Center, the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and collaboration with campus departments on students’ withdrawals and student basic needs efforts. This position requires excellent communication skills, partnership development skills, administrative finesse, problem-solving abilities, and passion for improving the student experience.

As the DOS/AVP you will demonstrates professionalism, initiative, sound judgement, tact and discretion while performing numerous complex responsibilities. This position requires a bold and dynamic visionary leader for the areas of responsibility and as a leader in the division of Student Success. The DOS/AVP leads initiatives to align practice with UM’s mission and Priorities for Action and delivers innovative and culturally-relevant programs and services to improve student wellbeing in a flourishing, diverse community.

The successful candidate will join the university at an exciting time of growth and will work with the VPSS to re-establish a comprehensive Dean of Students office. This position is required to possess or acquire the skills, expertise, and knowledge of student conduct on a university campus as conduct will transition to this office within the next 3-5 years in collaboration with University Housing.

This position is an in-person position located in Missoula, MT and is not eligible for remote work.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

Curry Health Administration

  • Responsible for forming the vision and direction of the university on matters of student wellness, counseling, dental, medical, Student Advocacy Resource Center (SARC) and operations (i.e., student insurance, facilities) along with department staff.
  • Design and complete annual strategic planning documents for the DOS/AVP Wellbeing unit and the university.
  • Work with division leadership on budget planning and execution.
  • Work with campus Human Resources staff for recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of staff.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate employees under direct supervision of position.

Student Support, Case Management and the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)

  • Serve, lead and manage response to complex student incidents and crisis.
  • Provide training for managing student crises and emergencies.
  • Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to deliver holistic student wellbeing initiatives utilizing data, socioecological framing and contemporary practices.
  • Oversee, lead, train and administer the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) for the university.
  • Help refer and administer emergency funds for students who are experiencing personal challenges.
  • Collaborate with the University of Montana’s Basic Needs committee and the Coordinated Care Team to help students find available resources.

Policy and Administration

  • Lead and administer the Admission’s Review process for the university including collaborating with Admissions, utilizing Maxient to administer the process, leading the committee, notifying the applicants of decisions and documenting the process.
  • Collaborate with enrollment services and academic affairs to address student semester withdrawals and explore proactive mechanisms for student success.
  • Participate in student conduct code review and related policy development.
  • Oversee development of plans to transition oversight community standards to the DOS office.

Lead the growth and expansion of parent/family initiatives and communities

  • Work with the VPSS to craft relevant and timely parent/family communications.
  • Respond to parents and families to support student concerns.
  • Support parent/family association activities.

Lead University initiatives and efforts

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Bias Response Team.
  • Supervise the Case Manager to assist with general duties as needed in the administration of the DOS/AVP office.
  • Work with Vice Provost for Academic Affairs to create support and resources for faculty navigating classroom behavior.
  • Provide leadership to all UM campuses, including: Mountain Campus, Missoula College and UM Bitterroot.
  • Provide leadership to UM’s affiliate campuses including: UM Helena College, UM Western and Montana Tech.

This position is responsible for supervising 6-7 full-time staff members who are responsible for different operations withing the Curry Health Center: medical, dental, counseling, wellness, operations, SARC and a case manager position.

Position Details

  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position ranges from $130,000-$140,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration or Counseling, Health Administration or a different related degree
  • At least eight to ten (8-10) years of progressive experience in Health Center Administration and/or Student Affairs with progressive movement into leadership roles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience supervising employees and demonstrated management skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • The ability to understand and utilize new technology within the office
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Maxient, Navigate, or other database, spreadsheets, etc., for data viewing, collection and entry
  • Ability to develop an understanding of the University of Montana’s mission, program, and policies
  • Knowledge of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) best practices for supporting diverse students’ wellbeing and success
  • Ability to formulate and enforce policies, complete departmental strategic planning, and assist with development of short- and long-term goals within the Student Success division
  • Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically, and through written communications
  • Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multitasking and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little supervision
  • Exceptional time management skills and ability to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability and willingness to participate in an on-call duty rotation for the division as needed
  • Awareness of the financial, social, cultural, psychological, and academic factors that can affect student success
  • Ability to work independently and exercise discretion and sound judgment, in sensitive student, staff, faculty or campus matters
  • Ability to react well under pressure, manage competing demands, and adapt well to changing circumstances in a fast turnaround environment; show resourcefulness and work proactively
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and managing people or building projects/initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Doctoral Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration, Counseling, Health Administration
  • Experience in University Student Health Care enterprises
  • Familiarity with safety and security protocols and emergency response procedures
